Erborian is probably the most well-known French-Korean brand in France, yet opinions remain divided. Its BB and CC creams have been bestsellers at Sephora for over ten years, and its Korean ingredients are reassuring, but a real question arises: is it a serious Korean skincare brand, or a tinted makeup brand riding the K-Beauty wave? Here is a complete and honest review, from products to ingredients, including what dermatologists think and its Yuka score.
What is Erborian? Origins, group, and positioning 🌿
Erborian is a French-Korean brand founded in 2007 by Hojung Lee, a Korean scientist specializing in herbal medicine, and Katalin Berenyi, a French entrepreneur. Since 2019, the brand has belonged to the L'Occitane group, which acquired it to strengthen its presence in the premium Asian beauty segment. The products are mostly formulated and manufactured in South Korea.
Its positioning is clear: hybrid skincare that combines skincare action and makeup results in one step. This is the fundamental difference from traditional Korean skincare brands like COSRX, Beauty of Joseon, or Anua, which focus on sequenced routines with highly concentrated active ingredients. Erborian, on the other hand, prioritizes simplicity: one product, multiple benefits, an immediately visible result.
This philosophy explains both its widespread success and its limitations for skin types seeking true in-depth work over the long term.
Dermatological review: what experts really say about Erborian ✨

Erborian products are generally dermatologically tested and formulated to minimize the risk of irritation. Dermatologists emphasize good overall tolerance, especially for sensitive and reactive skin, which is consistent with the use of soothing active ingredients like Centella Asiatica.
Several points consistently emerge in dermatologists' reviews of Erborian:
- The formulas are well-tolerated but remain hybrid cosmetic products, not therapeutic treatments. They visually improve the appearance of the skin without addressing a specific skin problem.
- For acne-prone or blemish-prone skin, some products contain silicones and film-forming agents that can clog pores in very oily skin.
- The concentrations of Korean active ingredients (centella, ginseng) are present but rarely communicated as percentages, making it difficult to assess their real effectiveness compared to pure skincare brands.
In summary: Erborian is a reliable brand for a simplified daily routine, but it does not replace a tailored Korean skincare routine if your goal is to treat persistent acne, aging, or hyperpigmentation.
Expert tip: Using a BB cream with SPF as your only sun protection is insufficient. The SPF 20 of Erborian BB cream is too low for optimal protection in summer, and the amount applied is rarely sufficient to achieve the advertised factor. Combine it with a Korean SPF 50+ on your bare skin, or use the CC cream as a finish over your sunscreen.
Erborian Yuka score: how good are their formulas really? 🔍
The Yuka score has become a purchasing reflex for many, and Erborian is no exception: queries like "erborian yuka review" and "cc cream erborian yuka review" generate thousands of monthly searches in France.
Erborian CC cream and BB cream receive varying scores depending on the versions on Yuka, generally between 50 and 70 out of 100, classified as "poor" to "bad" according to the algorithm. The ingredients flagged are mainly chemical UV filters (Benzophenone-3 or Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate) and some silicones. These Yuka classifications need to be contextualized:
- Chemical UV filters are necessary in any tinted product with SPF, and their safety is regularly re-evaluated by the European Commission.
- Silicones (Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane) improve texture and application but do not penetrate the dermis, and their environmental impact is more debated than their skin toxicity.
- Yuka evaluates ingredients individually, without considering actual concentrations or formula synergies.
Customer reviews of Erborian remain very positive: the brand shows a high rating on Sephora and Trustpilot with thousands of authentic reviews for its BB cream and CC cream. The discrepancy between the Yuka score and customer satisfaction illustrates the limitations of algorithmic evaluation applied to cosmetics.
Erborian products that truly deserve your attention 💧
Erborian offers a wide range, but not all products are equal. Here is an honest review of the most popular references, and those to avoid depending on your skin type.
| Product | For whom | Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ginseng BB Cream (SPF 20) | Normal to dry skin | Natural finish, hydration, time-saving | Insufficient SPF alone, can be heavy on oily skin |
| Centella Asiatica CC Cream (SPF 25) | Sensitive skin, redness | Adaptive, soothing, unifying | Light coverage only |
| Skin Therapy Serum | Tired, dull skin | Light texture, Korean active ingredients, quick radiance | Active ingredient concentration not communicated |
| Super BB Concealer | Skin with minor imperfections | Dual function: care/coverage | Not suitable for active acne-prone skin |
| Cleansing Oil | All skin types | Korean double cleansing, melts easily | Requires rinsing, not for unique first cleanser |
Is Erborian really a Korean brand? Origins and parent group 🌏
This is one of the most frequently asked questions about the brand, and the answer requires nuance. Erborian is French-Korean: the formulas are based on Korean ingredients and know-how (Centella Asiatica, ginseng, traditional herbal medicine), manufacturing is primarily done in South Korea, but marketing positioning and distribution are conceived in France.
Since 2019, the brand has belonged to the L'Occitane International group, listed in Hong Kong. This acquisition has allowed it to accelerate its global deployment, particularly in Asia and the United States, but does not change its formulation origins.
Compared to pure K-Beauty players like COSRX, Anua, or Beauty of Joseon, Erborian remains a bridge between the two cosmetic cultures: it makes Korean rituals accessible to a Western clientele who do not wish to adopt a 7-step routine. This is its strength, and also its limit.
Erborian vs pure Korean brands: when to choose what? 🪷

If you're looking to simplify your routine and achieve a quick "healthy glow" without building a complete skincare routine, Erborian perfectly meets this need. Its hybrid products work for normal to dry, sensitive, or reactive skin, looking for an effective daily beauty routine with few steps.
However, if your skin has specific needs (acne, hyperpigmentation, deep dehydration, skin aging), a routine with targeted active ingredients from K-Beauty brands will be much more effective. Brands like COSRX for acne and hydration, Beauty of Joseon for complexion and anti-aging, or Anua for sensitive sebaceous skin offer well-documented active ingredient concentrations and long-term results.
The right approach: take a free skin diagnostic to identify what your skin truly needs, before choosing between a hybrid approach like Erborian and a more structured Korean routine.
Erborian's star ingredients: effective or marketing? 🌱
Erborian consistently highlights two emblematic ingredients of Korean cosmetics:
Centella Asiatica (INCI name: Centella Asiatica Extract or Asiaticoside) is a well-documented soothing and repairing active ingredient. It stimulates collagen production, strengthens the skin barrier, and reduces redness. Studies published on PubMed confirm its healing and anti-inflammatory effects, particularly at concentrations above 1%. Erborian's use is consistent with this data, even if exact concentrations are not communicated.
Ginseng (Panax Ginseng Root Extract) has been used for centuries in traditional Korean medicine for its toning and antioxidant properties. In cosmetics, research indicates that it can improve skin radiance and protect against oxidative stress. Its anti-aging efficacy is promising but less documented than that of niacinamide or retinol.
Yuzu (Citrus Junos), an Asian citrus rich in vitamin C, is used in some formulas for its brightening properties. Vitamin C is one of the best-documented anti-spot active ingredients in dermatology, with proven efficacy at concentrations of 10% L-ascorbic acid or more. In a tinted product, the actual concentration of vitamin C from yuzu remains anecdotal.
Expert tip: Erborian often mixes a relevant star active ingredient (centella, ginseng) with film-forming texture agents necessary for the makeup effect. This is where comparing it to a pure Korean serum makes no sense: the product's objective is different. Judge Erborian for what it is, not for what it isn't.
What skin type is Erborian really suitable for? 💧
The right match between skin type and Erborian products is key to avoiding disappointment. Here's a direct summary:
- Normal to dry skin: ideal profile for Erborian. Textures are rich and melting, the healthy glow effect is immediate, and tolerance is excellent.
- Sensitive skin: a good option thanks to soothing Centella Asiatica and the absence of strong perfumes in most references.
- Combination skin: variable results depending on the areas. The T-zone can become saturated during the day, especially with the more covering BB cream.
- Oily skin: most Erborian formulas are too film-forming and can enhance shine and promote pore dilation. It's better to choose Korean skincare formulated for sebum.
- Active acne-prone skin: not recommended during a breakout. Some texture ingredients can clog pores and prolong imperfections.

What we really remember about Erborian 🌸
Erborian is not a scam, but it is also not a Korean skincare brand in the strict sense. It is a practical beauty brand, designed for people who want the benefits of K-Beauty without the commitment of a multi-step routine.
Its hybrid products work well for normal to dry and sensitive skin, simplifying daily routines. For specific skincare goals (acne, anti-aging, lasting radiance), a selection of specialized Korean skincare will be more effective in the long run.
